Annie was authored by Asim Shankar in early 2002 originally for a face detection system. At the time, he studied at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, in the Computer Science and Engineering department as an undergraduate.

From 2004, it has been under the wings of Ondrej. I have been improving annie during a two-semester NN course at Charles University, Prague . Now, I use it for some robotics stuff.
